In this blog post, I will share some of my top tips for planning an elopement in Norway, as well as highlight some of the most beautiful and iconic locations in the country. Whether you’re looking for a secluded beach ceremony or a mountaintop exchange of vows, Norway has something for everyone.

Why Choose Norway for Your Elopement?

There are many reasons why couples choose to elope to Norway. Here are just a few:

The natural beauty

Norway is home to some of the most breath-taking landscapes in the world. From the fjords and waterfalls to the mountains and forests, the country is a paradise for nature lovers.

The adventure

If you and your partner are the type of couple who loves to explore and seek out new experiences, Norway offers endless opportunities for adventure. From hiking and kayaking to skiing and snowboarding. Whether its a life long hobby, or a bucket list tick you want to include in your elopement, you wont be short of things to explore.

The intimacy

Eloping allows you to focus on what’s truly important – your love and commitment to each other. Norway is still mostly a hidden gem, and is not yet a major tourist destination compared to other popular destinations around the world. This means you can find an elopement location that can be private and intimate. By exchanging vows in a more intimate setting, you can fully embrace the emotion and meaning of your special day.

The flexibility

With an elopement, you have the freedom to design a day that is completely unique to you. Whether you want a small ceremony with just the two of you or a celebration with a few close friends and family, the options are endless. Norway has no legal requirements for the locations you choose to elope. You can elope almost anywhere you can think of, from the highest mountain top to the deepest fjord. You can choose the locations that speak most meaning in your relationship.

Inclusivity

Marriage in Norway is a very open, inclusive, and diverse process. The Norwegian culture is very accepting of LGBTQ+ couples, and open to all religions and traditions. No matter who you are as a couple, you will be treated with the same dignity and respect as the next person. You will also have the same rights, by state marriage or church should you choose to include your faith in your elopement.

Top Locations for an Elopement in Norway

Now that you’ve decided to elope to Norway, the next step is to choose the perfect location. Here are a few of my top recommendations:

The Lofoten Islands

These stunning islands, located in the Arctic Circle, offer a dramatic and otherworldly setting for an elopement. With towering mountains, crystal-clear water, and a rugged coastline, the Lofoten Islands are a photographer’s dream.

The West Coast Fjords

Norway’s fjords are some of the most iconic and beautiful landscapes in the world. From the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord to the Sognefjord, the options are endless. Imagine exchanging vows in front of a stunning waterfall or on a secluded beach with the fjord as your backdrop.

Tromsø

For a truly magical elopement experience, consider saying “I do” under the Northern Lights. Also known as the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights are a natural light display that can be seen in the polar regions of the Earth. Norway is one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights. What could be more romantic than saying your vows surrounded by this natural wonder?

Tromsø is also known as the Paris of the North, and for very good reason. The city streets are lit with fairy-tale like lights throughout polar night, and by some jaw dropping sky’s during midnight sun. Its hard not to fall totally in love with the city and its surroundings. What better place to show how much you love each other?

Senja

Norway is home to some of the most beautiful mountains in the world, and Senja is no exception. Making it a perfect location for an outdoor ceremony. Whether you’re standing atop a mountain peak or exchanging vows on the islands ruggedly beautiful coast. The views are sure to take your breath away.

The Forests

Its no secret Norway has its fair share of forests, which are full of natural wonders. Home to an abundance of wildlife and largely unexplored even today. You might consider Stabbursdalen Nation Park, for a peaceful elopement. A very well kept local secret, home to the worlds most northerly pine forest. Alternatively, Jegersberg forest and hiking trails, with wheelchair accessible hiking trails. Or, Jotunheimen National Park, home of the giants. Imagine saying your vows surrounded by towering trees and the sound of a nearby river or stream, offering you a peaceful and serene setting for an elopement.

Choosing your Ceremony type

Your next step is to decide if you want to get legally married in Norway or create an entirely unique experience and do the paperwork in your home country.

Legal marriage of two foreign citizens

While it is possible for most people to get legally married in Norway you will need a government approved officiant to handle the legalities. The paperwork process for non Norwegian citizens can be a complex process, which having an approved officiant on your team can help smooth out a little. My biggest tip is to start this process as early as possible, as there can be some unexpected delays when submitting paperwork. See Skatteetaten for more info on what is needed for a legal marriage in Norway

Most approved officiants in Norway either work for the local government in the area you have chosen to elope, or they are part of the church. Either way they are usually very happy to customise your ceremony, and include your own personal touches, vows or symbolism, to create your unique experience.

Consider a celebrant

A celebrant can help you create a personalized ceremony that truly reflects your love and commitment to each other. In Norway this does mean your marriage will need to be legalised before or after your elopement ceremony. Most couples that choose this route, sign their paperwork in their home country, usually opting to save the time and extra paperwork.

When choosing to legalise your marriage at home, this can open up your elopement ceremony to consider other options. You could choose to incorporate some traditional Viking traditions, a handfasting, or keep it just the two of you and say your vows in complete privacy.

Tips for Planning an Elopement in Norway

Once you’ve chosen the perfect location, it’s time to start planning your elopement. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

  • Choose a date: Norway’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s important to choose a date that allows for flexibility. If you can, give yourself a buffer of a few days either side of your chosen date. Flight delays, bad weather, lost baggage can always cause unexpected delays. It is also good to have a couple of days to find your feet in your chosen destination and relax before your elopement. Consider the time of year and the weather conditions when selecting your date. • Plan your attire: Norway’s weather can range from cold and snowy to warm and sunny, so it’s important to plan your attire accordingly. If you’re planning a winter elopement, be sure to bring warm layers and comfortable, sturdy shoes. If you’re eloping in the summer, consider lightweight, breathable fabrics, and good walking shoes.
  • Plan your transportation: Norway’s landscape is vast and varied, so it’s important to consider how you will get to your elopement location. If you’re planning a mountain or wilderness elopement, you may need to hire a guide or use a snowmobile, or helicopter due to the conditions of the landscape. If you’re eloping in a more populated area, consider public transportation or hiring a car.
  • Don’t forget the details: While eloping is a more intimate and relaxed option than a traditional wedding, it’s still important to consider the little details. From flowers and music to food and drinks, be sure to plan these details in advance to ensure that your elopement is everything you’ve dreamed of.
